The Best Weapon

The Best Weapon by Martin Bolton and David Pilling

This is a best book ever!

What a story! I really tried to drag this book out because I didn't want it to end. It is as if each author took a brother and wrote his part of the story then they brought them together seamlessly - well done guys. The only thing I can think of to complain about is that it wasn't long enough - because it is that good.

I liked the characters, brothers, who grew up on totally different paths and I found myself cheering for them as they discovered their true selves. The world building is excellent and character development is very good. The story flowed easily... all I will say is to read this book because you will not be disappointed.

Life Knocks

Life Knocks by Craig Stone

A Very Good Read!

Craig Stone is sharing a part of his life in similes and metaphors leaving you laughing, smiling, sad, and at times wondering WTH? He shows us that for every decision we make there are consequences and possibly even repercussions - these are his.

The book begins with a letter to management resigning his position at a bank. He pretty much says everything everyone has wanted to say at some point in their lives but was too afraid to say. I laughed so hard and so much I had to read it three times. After Mr. Stone walks away from the world of employment which I like to call “The Wheel of Hell” to become a writer his journey begins…and what an interesting journey it is.

I liked the way he presented his story. I also like what I affectionately now call Craigisms one of which is what he was trying to do all along during a small part of this period of his life, “Perhaps if we choose not to actively participate in life eventually life knocks” …again and again until sometimes it knocks us silly (mine). I am looking forward to reading his book called “The Squirrel that Dreamt of Madness” this story begins where “Life Knocks” leaves off.

An overview...

Life Knocks is the story of a guy who falls from grace, but rather than confront that fall, decides to hide in his room and pretend it never happened; but, little by little, Life Knocks... The story will confront, challenge, evoke laughter, tears and, in parts, possibly offence... But then life never claimed to be Disney world.

Step outside your bubble, because the only thing to fear in life is living in one. Life Knocks is cheaper than a coffee and the Disney Princess Cinderella Flocked Chair – which according to Argos is the perfect addition to any child’s bedroom or playroom. So, download Life Knocks now.

Empire (In Her Name)

Empire (In Her Name) by Michael R. Hicks

This is a best book ever!

A young Reza Gard is taken away from a planet for orphans by Kreelan worriers and forced to live on the alien's home planet. With everything he knows and loves stripped away from him, Reza has to prove that he is not an animal and is worthy of life among the alien race. He not only survives he is part of a prophesy - Reza rocks!

The story of Empire will make you wonder who are really the animals - humans or the Kreelans. This is a story of slavery, survival, and love. Nothing is over done here and the story is good to the last page.

Empire is told in a way that kept me turning pages. The editing is very good and should even please the edit police. Open this book and be prepared to be beamed to an alien planet, submerged into their culture and learn to live the way of a Kreelan worrier.

I downloaded Confederation ( book 2 of the trilogy) before I finished this book because, yeah it is that good. I can't wait to see what happens to Reza next.

EMPIRE is the coming-of-age story of Reza Gard, a young boy of the Human Confederation who is swept up in the century-long war with the alien Kreelan Empire. Nightmarish female warriors with blue skin, fangs, and razor sharp talons, the Kreelans have technology that is millennia beyond that of the Confederation, yet they seek out close combat with sword and claw, fighting and dying to honor their god-like Empress.

Captured and enslaved, Reza must live like his enemies in a grand experiment to see if humans have souls, and if one may be the key to unlocking an ages old curse upon the Kreelan race. Enduring the brutal conditions of Kreelan life, Reza and a young warrior named Esah-Zhurah find themselves bound together by fate and a prophecy foretold millennia before they were born.

The Coffee Shop

The Coffee Shop by Lauren Hunter

Aww, what a love story...of the weird kind...just the way I like it. This is a great addition to my library.

The only predictable things in this story is Derrick's love for Annie and that things are going to change.

Derrick Sloane is a successful and single businessman who meets the girl of his dreams - yes literally.

It all started with a dream about meeting a women and having a relationship with her - well that's just about where "normal" jumped out of the window. Derrick got stuck in some kind of chaos theory more specifically the butterfly effect that lasted over several time-lines. If you pay attention you will see where the little things happen that changes the larger outcomes in each time-line but one thing always remained the same - Derricks love for Annie.

I liked it plain and simple - it's the kind of story that makes you wonder "what would I do". I didn't get bored and I didn't want to put the book down either - time just flew by because it is a good clean story... done well.

The overview...

If Derrick thought experiencing alternate timelines and glimpses into the future was strange, then he had no idea it was about to get a whole lot more strange.

When Derrick Sloane meets Annie Maddock and falls madly in love, he believes he's met the girl of his dreams. Only he then awakes to discover she is exactly that...nothing more than a dream. Disheartened, he goes to the first coffee shop he can find. There he meets Annie. She is at the same table, reading the same book, and he fast realizes his dream has shown him his own future. But when a misstep alters that perfect future he tries to fix it, every attempt only making it worse.

Dreaming the future can be a nightmare when you see what's coming...but should you still try to change it?

Pack of Lies

Pack of Lies by Laura Anne Gilman

This is a very good read...

Pack of Lies, Paranormal Scene Investigators Series book #2, is much better than Hard Magic which is book #1 - good job Laura Anne Gilman I knew you could do it!

This story takes place 8 months after the PUPI team was created and they had some actual job experience up to this point. There is a violent crime committed and the investigators are called in before the cops has a chance to stomp all over the scene. The Fatae and Talent communities along with the Nulls (regular humans) are involved in this roller coaster of an investigation. This one is the big case that will place PUPI on the map so everyone has to do their best.

I loved the story and Bonita Torres makes this series fun to read. We learn more about the "Big Dogs" who started the team and see team building in action. Gilman did a good job with this one when compared to the first book of the series. I think my problem is Gilman's writing style because there were a few places where I still felt it could have flowed easier. With that said I still liked it and may read the next book in the series. This book is a good read that is definitely worth a mention.

My name is Bonita Torres, and eight months ago I was an unemployed college graduate without a plan. Now I'm an investigator with the Private Unaffiliated Paranormal Investigations team of New York. Pretty awesome, right?

The Cosa Nostradamus, the magical community, isn't quick to give up its secrets, though. Not even to fellow members. Not even when it's in their best interests. So we've been busting our tails, perfecting our forensic skills, working to gain acceptance. The team's tight… but we have our quirks, too. And our Big Dog, Benjamin Venec …well, he's a special case, all right.

But we can't give up. We're needed, especially when a case comes along that threatens to pit human against fatae. But one wrong move could cost us everything we've worked for….
