Description

Harry Chatham’s company puts on corporate presentations, otherwise known as Dog & Pony shows*. When he hires a Traffic Manager to make his work easier, he finds the opposite happening. His new employee displays extraordinary skills and perceptions that drag Harry into realms he didn't know existed.

Harry is thrust into plots to take over both this world and another that was previously invisible to him. His life becomes mixed up with CIA plots, corporate counter plots, strange evil mages, lovely green-eyed young ladies, and numerous otherworldly beings, both pastoral and predatory.

Dog & Pony follows Harry on a comic romp through fantastic perils as he tries vainly to return to his life to the way it was before the strangely-named Traffic Manager joined his company. Fortunately for the reader of this series, he never seems to escape the Trouble he's found himself in.

*Dog & Pony Show - A term that evolved in early 20th century America. Traveling presentations, advertised as full-fledged circuses, would turn up with only a trained dog and pony. The present-day meaning describes any presentation that delivers more flash than substance, containing meager truth.

Excerpt

“Harry, we quit,” Laura proclaimed.

Oh crap!

I looked around the table to see if she spoke for all of those assembled. They had the same look as when I'd last seen them yesterday. Only drier. The hysteria in the pit of my stomach leaped up. My life was getting complicated.

Again.

“Laura, darling,” I pleaded, “what's wrong?”

“Harry, we had a small village as our union crew yesterday. They never got the notice about the crew size.” Laura attacked the subject. “I had the requisition all set and in the outbox weeks ago.”

“Laura, these are Broadway stage hands! They never listen to anyone.” I supplied a lame excuse.

“I specifically put those color choices into the server to be e-mailed to the scene shop,” Joel said. “They claim they never got them.” He pouted down into his latte, which he ordered from one particular coffee house.

“You probably got their e-mail address wrong,” I stated.

“Harry, I was replying to their e-mail,” Joel said.

“You know, I never trusted that new version of Windows!” I pounded my fist down on the table.

“Harry, our version of Windows is so old, it's written in Latin,” Laura stated.

“And that's why Rome collapsed!” I launched another lame excuse.

“Aw, man, none of the stuff is working,” Sidney said. “The only reason why the set piece wasn't thrown out of the theater was because the thing arrived too damned late for anyone to check for the flame-proofing certificate.”

“You see, it helped us to be late on delivery,” I said. I had a whole herd of lame excuses limping around the room.

“Harry,” Laura reached over and grabbed me on the arm with both hands. She was starting to get angry, and I didn't want that. She leaned forward and brought a searchlight-like stare boring into my eyes. “We've already got a whole lot of clients who are misinforming us; we can't misinform ourselves. You've got to fix things.”

A siren wailed down below in the street, a normal sound in New York. Its clarion call confirmed that I had an emergency exploding around me and needed to get on this problem, fast. As owner and operator of a small business, my unofficial but actual job title is: President and Janitor. I was reverting to the latter and listening to what my bosses had to tell me. “What's the fix?” I asked.

“You've got to get one of those things for this office,” Laura stated firmly.

“One of those things?” I probed.

“Yes.”

“What things?”

“You know,” she said, waving her hand around vaguely. “What are they called? Oh yeah, a Traffic Manager.” She implied the initial capitals in her tone of voice. Like all of us in the biz, she had a PowerPoint Title Case accent.

“A Traffic Manager?” I'd heard about such things, but had never met one in the flesh.

“Yes.”

“You want to add someone to the staff? But we've always been a group,” I protested. “The Fab Four. We can't mess with our chemistry.”

“Harry, we're the Frustrated Four, right now,” Laura said.

“We're the Frantic Four, trying to catch up,” Joel complained.

“We're the Fucked-up Four, with all this confusion,” Sidney pointed out.

Laura bore her gaze into me. “Harry, a Traffic Manager.”

“You bet!” I enthused. “I'll get right on it.” I paused and looked around at the faces surrounding me. “By the way, what does a Traffic Manager do?”

“Circulates all of these messages to the right people on the network,” Joel announced.

“Gets the jobs flowing smoothly through the office,” Laura proclaimed.

“Gets all the gear trucking to the right place at the right time,” Sidney pronounced.

I stared at them. When you have people ready to quit, you don't tell them they just gave you three different answers. “Is that what a Traffic Manager does?”

“Yes!” they affirmed together.

I smiled and nodded. The faces in front of me were quite resolved. I decisively slammed my hand down on the table. “I'll get right on it.”

Guest Post, Excerpt and Contest by Jana Richards

Dating at Work

Eight years after he leaves her at the altar, fate throws Tony back together with Olivia when they find themselves working at the same museum. In my humorous contemporary romantic novel, “There Goes the Groom”, working together ends happily for Tony and Olivia, but in real life, is dating at the workplace a good idea? As Careercast.com asks, is it more likely to lead to marriage or unemployment?

You probably know of people in your workplace who have dated, sometimes happily, but sometimes with disastrous results. After all, if you date a ‘civilian’ and you decide after a few dates that you can’t stand the sight of him, you can just break up. But if he works in the same office as you, you’re going to have maintain a professional relationship with him, which may be difficult if you now want to gouge his eyes out.

If workplace romances are fraught with peril, including potential unemployment, why do so many people take the plunge? According to Psychology Today, anywhere from 40 to 47% of employees have engaged in a workplace romance, with another 20% indicating that they would be open to having a romance at work. Psychology Today identifies four main reasons these romances are so prevalent:

Time. As individuals spend more time at work, it’s natural that they develop relationships. As one participant of the Psychology Today study says “That’s who you spend your time with [so] that’s the person you’re going to share the more intimate details of your life.”

Ease of Opportunity. The workplace fosters close working relationships. One participant of the study said: “I think because it’s convenient, honestly. You meet people and if you’re working in the same environment, you have common interests in terms of what you believe in.”

Similarity. People who enjoy the same kind of work naturally have things in common. Participants in the study “believed people engage in workplace romances because of the similarities they uncover by being with coworkers in a comfortable environment.”

The Hookup. Some workplace romances are driven by the desire to have a physical relationship. A participant described: “One three letter word: sex.”

It turns out that who you date at the office makes a difference as to how the rest of the staff treats you. Psychology Today reported that employees perceived coworkers dating superiors to be less credible than those dating peers. Also, employees indicated they would trust coworkers dating superiors less, feel less close to those coworkers, and lie to those coworkers more than colleagues dating peers.

If you decide to date a co-worker, even though you know the potential risks, here’s a few tips from Glamour.com to (hopefully) keep your hookup from turning into a disaster (read all the tips here):

If One of You Manages The Other, Just Don’t Date, Period. Don’t date or sleep with your boss or subordinate. It puts both of you in an awkward (and fireable) position. If you really think this might be the love of your life, consider leaving your job before you start a relationship. If it’s just a fling you’re after, don’t do it.

Once It’s a Relationship, Go Public (to the necessary parties) ASAP. If you and a co-worker actually start dating, and plan on being a couple for a while, stop keeping it a secret. Tell your bosses/HR Representatives/whoever needs to know, and assure them that you’ll continue to keep your work life as professional as possible.

Your Career Comes First. If you’re wondering what behaviors are and aren’t okay when dating a co-worker, remember that your career comes first. Anything that might make you look unprofessional should be avoided, so never engage in public displays of affection, and don’t let your relationship become the center of office gossip.

Have you ever had an office romance? How did it end?

About the Author:

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish. Chris Philbrook

Dark Recollections: Adrian's Undead Diary Book One
by Chris Philbrook
266 Pages
Self-Published October 31, 2013
Genre: Horror, Zombies, Apocalyptic

Reviewed by Shay Festa a.k.a. The Bookie Monster

Beheading a zombie isn't easy in a world where you're more afraid of the living than the dead. Adrian Ring's simple life is thrown into chaos when the world is ripped apart by a plague of undead and legions of desperate survivors. Retreating to Auburn Lake Preparatory Academy, Adrian attempts to rescue friends and family on the way while dancing around his impending insanity over who and what he left behind, and evading maniac survivors. He saves his cat Otis, but shoots his mom. Pretty successful, all things considered.

Dark Recollections is the first part of Adrian's own story of how he survived after "That Day." Told through his eyes as he talks to his laptop, affectionately named 'Mr. Journal," and through short stories that entwine with his tales that bring forth dark visions of a world being eaten alive by an unimaginable evil. Adrian's Undead Diary is an eight part epic about a solitary, guilt stricken man that didn't think he deserved to live, but realizes very soon that he survived, and suffered for a reason.

Originally released as an online serial, Adrian's Undead Diary is now available as an eight book series. How this one slipped by me is baffling, as it fits perfectly with my preferences and meets all my needs in a piece of work. Chris Philbrook, the very talented author of the series, originally submitted Dark recollections for review. When it came up in my queue, I read it in one sitting. The book was so entertaining, I managed to get through all 266 pages in under three hours; there was no way I was putting it down. As soon as I got back from vacation, and within internet range, I contacted the author to submit more of the series. My whistle was suitably wetted, and I wanted more!

My review appears to have been perfectly timed to release for the holiday sale of Dark recollections. From December 24th - 31st. Regularly priced at $3.99 (and well worth it), Dark recollections will be on sale for $0.99! Snatch up your copy and treat yourself for the holidays.

Adrian Ring, dorm supervisor for a private school, finds himself jarred awake by the sound of gunshots. A woman lay in the road, her head a mass of pulp from the impact of a bullet. It is only then that he realized what he had shrugged off as a hoax was indeed the zombie apocalypse. Adrian wooed me with his self deprecating humor as he wrote entries into "Mr. Journal". I found myself laughing as he went old-school and pulled out "nincompoop", and took out his frustration on his journal, frequently telling it to F-off.

Armed with a box of food, a couple new weapons from the local gun shop, and his fat cat Otis, Adrian hunkers down and barricades himself behind the walls of the school as things go from bad to worse in his community.

Dark Recollections does not divulge the cause of the zombie outbreak, only that if you die, you turn. Philbrook's zombies are of the slow, shambling, Romero variety. As a lover of the gore, I appreciated his use of description and could easily envision the undead as they came to life on the pages (pun intended).

One of the things I found most successful about the book was Philbrook's ability to take a normally narrow writing perspective and still give readers a feel for what was happening beyond just a single person. I didn't feel as if I were reading a narrow scope of the events as told by Adrian.

So, what's the verdict? Great story line with laugh out loud humor and bloody deaths, three dimensional character development, and an exciting, fast-paced piece of work that gives even the most notable zompoc authors a run for their money.

Review by Shay Festa, A.K.A. The Bookie Monster

Mike is back. The battle with Eliza is past. Now Mike must strike out once again in a desperate race against time as his son and best friend are succumbing to the zombie virus within them. What he does not know is that an old foe has risen up and a more insidious threat has emerged to not just the Talbots but all of humanity.

When I grow up, I want to be Mark Tufo! This author is fantastic. He manages to once again spin a tale of terror while still managing to make me laugh out loud. His newest piece of work has earned the coveted Five-Star Fire Rating from the Bookie Monster.

Zombie Fallout 7 is the latest in Tufo's line of great titles. Without Eliza to keep the zombies at bay, it's an all out dog fight for the survival of Mike Talbot and company. The race against time is on for BT and Justin, still infected and in danger of turning. Once again they battle zombie and man alike. Not to mention the ever present Henry the dog stinky pooting, which is almost worse than zombies. (Having two dogs, I can tell you...there is nothing worse than puppy poots)

The zombies are getting smarter. They show signs of thinking and planning. They've even begun assessing situations and running away when risk outweighs reward. But the real stand out for this reader is the banter between Mike and BT. Tufo continues telling the story from the perspective of Mike's journal entries. And Mike continues to be a highly sarcastic and sometimes self deprecating narrator.
Mike: "I don't know what you're talking about. Blame the black man carrying it."
BT: "Oh, it's always the black mans fault, right Talbot?"

Mike: "Look at the evidence.
"
The only problem with a Tufo book is that it ends! This reader is impatiently already waiting for book 8. If the humor doesn't get you, then the unique story line and well thought out characters will. Much like me, I suspect you won't be able to put it down. This latest installment is every bit exciting and captivating as the first book. A feat hard to achieve as most series fall victim to waning and regurgitated story lines. Each book in the Zombie Fallout series has been original and there has been no decline in momentum.
'The nose of the truck dipped down as I drove off the road and into a culvert. My heart skipped a beat or seventeen as I dug the front end into the upslope. The wheels spun for a moment. I think it was zombies who actually saved us. A few slammed into the rear end and lent just enough force to allow my rear wheels to catch and make the truck start up the other side. I rolled down my window. "Thanks for the push," I yelled as I waved. It's quite possible I wasn't completely under control of my own emotions. Lack of blood flow to the brain most likely being the cause. See earlier part about heart skipping beats. "You are fucking nuts," BT yelled, looking around I think for another seat belt to strap over himself.'
I listened to the audio version, narrated by Sean Runnette, and was pleased at the dry humor his voice injected into the story. The only thing I would have liked to see differently is the voice chosen for Tommy. It was just a touch too juvenile for me.

Zombie Fallout is one of the best zombie series on the market. It doesn't hurt that Tufo is a fellow Bostonian, either. If you haven't read them yet...well, shame on you! Get to reading! You won't be disappointed.

M.L. Ryan

Excerpt by M.L. Ryan and Review...

A Best Book Ever...

When I read the book description I thought - well this may be an okay story at least the "man stuck in an ebook reader" aspect was different. And I also thought that it would be a sappy romance novel maybe with a love triangle. And then I started reading it... and fell in love with the character Hailey and her co-workers - whoa!

From the first chapter to the last there is something to laugh or smile at while reading. M. L. Ryan came up with a hilarious story about Hailey's last job and why she wasn't working there anymore - that's where I got hooked into the story. I thought if the story starts out this crazy then it's for me. I was right.

The book is written in a casual language that feels more conversational like - meaning... It's fun and easy to read. I like the humor, the mystery, and the adventure - even the not so sexy parts. Don't pass this one by - you have got to read it.

As I lay in the darkness, it occurred to me that I must be the most boring single 30 year-old ever. I didn’t go out much, I ate crappy food. I couldn’t even remember the score of the games I just watched.

This was not how I had imagined myself at this point in my life. Had my marriage not crashed and burned, we probably would have a baby by now. Yeah, and I would still be married to an asstard. He probably would have spawned asstardlets. I just wanted to feel like my life was going somewhere, like I was accomplishing something. Rolling over on my side, I vowed to try to get myself together and move forward.

When I finally fell asleep, I dreamt I went on my first post-divorce date. The guy took me to a fancy restaurant, ordered lots of food and expensive wine and then ditched me for the voluptuous hostess. I was presented with the check but lacked any means of paying it. After negotiating a payment plan with the restaurant owner, which involved allowing him to indulge his foot fetish with my pinkie toes and some flavored whipped cream, I left the place and got into my car, which was really weird, because my date drove.

There in the parking lot were dine-and-dash and the hostess, groping each other with utter abandon. I revved up the engine, threw the car into drive and peeled out towards them. The headlights illuminated their stunned faces as I spun the car sharply, rolled down the window and chucked a lit Molotov cocktail - made from the empty wine bottle from dinner - at them and sped off humming the theme to “The Lion King.”

I woke up thinking I must be making progress. Usually in my dreams I ran them over after I set them on fire.

Book Description:

As soon as Hailey Parrish discovered her husband was cheating with her co-worker, she swore off men. She had to find another job when her boss went to prison for being a pimp in his spare time. Three years later. Hailey still hadn’t gone on a date and she milks chinchilla for a living. Her life is about to get weirder.

While in pursuit of inter-dimensional miscreants who use their arcane powers to prey upon humans, Sebastian Kess was ambushed and mortally wounded. To save his life, he used his own magic to convert his soul to binary code and transfer it into Hailey’s soon-to-be shipped Kindle eBook reader. When Hailey inadvertently releases him and he inhabits her body, she finally has a man inside her, just not in the way she imagined.

Hailey must come to grips with the existence of the parallel dimension of Coursodon and the realization that magically inclined non-humans walk the world while dealing with Sebastian’s arrogant banter in her head. Her predicament also introduces her to another supernatural, the handsome could-be-the-man-of-herdreams Alex Sunderland.

The action moves from Hailey’s hometown of Tucson, Arizona to New England and across Europe as she and Alex try to return Sebastian to his own body while staying one step ahead of the criminals who want to keep him where he is.

Special Offers, the first book of the Coursodon Dimension Series, combines paranormal romance, urban fantasy, a bit of science fiction and a healthy dose of quirky humor.
