taRNished is a medical thriller that takes you on a journey of innocence, murder, sex, and domination which invokes the question in the readers mind while being entertained, “how do I get out of the hospital alive?”

Author Willie Stewart is a critical care Registered Nurse with 13 plus years of nursing experience who believes that an overburdened, understaffed nursing work force will lend itself to more and more abuses with the advent of Obamacare which is adding tens of millions more patients into the healthcare system. The subject matter of the medical thriller taRNished is timely and will be for the next few years for the following reasons:

  • The Registered Nurse work force is aging out with average age 45
  • There is a prolonged nursing shortage and there are not enough nursing instructors
  • The baby boomers are all retiring and getting older and entering the hospital in more critical condition
  • OBAMACARE will add an additional 22 million newly insured people to an already overburdened healthcare system
  • If the debate over pathway to citizenship is successful, 11 million more undocumented workers will be adding to this burden on the fragile American healthcare system
Real killers like healthcare villain Kermit Gosnell MD, serial killer Charles Cullen RN, and more have thrived in the previous system. People like them and Dale, RNfrom the blockbuster novel taRNished will find it much easier to thrive in the coming years.

Willie L Stewart Sr. Biography

Willie L. Stewart is a critical care Registered Nurse, author, novelist, entrepreneur, member of the Tampa Writers Alliance, and the Florida Writers Association. His debut novel taRNished promises to entertain while shaking the very foundation of healthcare and the public’s confidence in that system in order to spur on debate for proper reforms. With over 13 years in various critical care settings he brings a level of expertise to the relevant topics in today’s media that are highlighted in the debut novel taRNished. With 2014 quickly heralding in the full implementation of the divisive OBAMACARE healthcare plan, Stewart notes that over ten million more people will be shoved into an already overburdened healthcare system. In addition Stewart notes that the pathway to citizenship initiatives will add millions more undocumented workers to this system and these increasing numbers along with other factors will allow pathological individuals to thrive in the environment created. Willie has taken a unique approach to marketing and promoting his debut novel. He has given his lead character, Dale RN a registered nurse serial killer, a significant online presence. A marketer/publicist has lauded Stewart for these efforts and says he is breaking ground. Dale RN has his own blog, is on facebook, twitter, pinterest, linkedin, google plus, and more. Through Stewart’s herculean efforts Dale communicates and interacts with the public on a regular basis.

In addition to Willie Stewart’s efforts on his debut novel, Willie Stewart has published online articles, written various successful worldwide press releases, runs an independent record label (2MCH4YA) and publishing company and is a manager for indie recording artists. He has been an executive producer of an award winning online talk show that won the award against the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Steve Harvey, and Michael Baisden. The show was the only indie talk show in consideration against the heavyweights. Stewart has been the President/Production coordinator of a music foundation before stepping down. With all of his irons in the fire, Willie Stewart manages to find time to romance and fall in love all over again after 23 years of marriage to the lovely Shannon Stewart who is also a Registered Nurse of similar experience and an aspiring writer. With three healthy adult children and two grandchildren, Stewart only needs to look inward for motivation.

One day while I was plugged into the Twitterverse author Willie Stewart Sr. asked me if I wanted to see his book trailer. He said,"Do you want to see my trailer? It's the first RAP book trailer ever and there's nothing like it." I am SO easy... I couldn't say no to that... of course I wanted to see his trailer! He sent me the link and I watched the trailer and it was actually very good, hmmm - props to the creator.

The story of Dale Wilson is very good. The majority of the story takes place in Orlando Florida at the Orlando's Dyson Memorial Hospital. Dale Wilson, RN and his mom Isabel works there caring for patients and "releasing" patients as they please. Dale and mom are very good at what they do - so good that they get it all done during work hours. Then comes Stephanie - wait until you meet her! Whoa, enough said about her.

I liked the story but was freaked out by it a few times especially when I thought about all of the stories I heard about people who went into hospitals and didn't come out alive. The story world is believable, the characters are well developed and again believable. Mr. Stewart paced the story in a way that kept me interested. Although this is not my favorite genre I did enjoy reading about Dale, his crazy mom, and his girlfriend Stephanie. It's good, believable, and frightening -good job!

Guest Post and Excerpt by Willie Stewart Sr

(Read this post for a surprise at the end)

HE TOOK AWAY HER SIGHT SO I COULD SEE

Every married couple goes through their ups and downs and marrying at a young age people thought we would not last. However, our union was blessed by God. He saw fit to put two polar opposites together and make it work. Me, the city boy from rough and tough Gary, Indiana and her, the country girl from rural Ozark, Alabama. We were nothing alike but a perfect match made in heaven. I grew up in the church but had swayed away from it and had trouble with my convictions and beliefs but did not feel it was a problem. God continued to favor me through my life and bless me and at some point I started feeling I was doing it all myself. I was becoming a success because of my own efforts and my own dogged determination. I even motivated others to be as successful as I was becoming and to emulate my techniques for studying and numerous other things. I had all but forgotten about God. My wife had always been religious. She got on her knees and said her prayers at night and truly felt a presence and a relationship with God at all times. She accepted my nonchalant attitude toward religion and prayed for me constantly. She was salt, I was pepper. She was sugar, I was spice. Everything about this woman was sweet and down to earth wholesomeness. We were both in college for nursing about 9 years into our marriage. I sent her to school first so I was a year behind her. We were accomplishing this feat with no problems. Raising our kids while working and going to school…it was a breeze. We were the dynamic duo and nothing could stop us. Then it happened. One day she awakened to fluttery sensations in her chest. We went to the doctor’s office and he was so worried he admitted her directly from the office. We were not nurses yet, there was no google to research what was going on but we were not afraid. We took it in stride and picked the kids up from daycare and camped out in the hospital room for the night. The sun peaked through the smallest of cracks in the window blinds and I heard my wife’s voice and stretched to take on another day of hard work. The blank look on her face was not immediately evident as she asked if I could turn some lights on. Not really looking at her I stretched some more and stepped over a couple of slumbering kids and opened the blinds fully and I turned and was shocked at how big my wife’s pupils were. I waved my hand in front of her face not wanting to startle or alarm her and she whispered, did you turn them on? I stuttered, yeah I opened the blinds and it’s broad daylight babe. With calmness akin to a bomb maker attaching the final wire she whispered I don’t think I can see. I screamed out loud….in my head but tried to maintain the calmness that she displayed. If it was me, they would have been putting me in a rubber room. The next couple of months saw us traveling up and down the state of Alabama to this specialist and that specialist having a multitude of painful and invasive tests which even included psychological testing. Not one doctor could tell us what was going on. They even removed the braces that we were paying thousands of dollars for so that they could get better scans. Finally in the most renowned hospital in the state we were to see the top doctors. It was here that WE were going to solve this problem. A rheumatologist said he “thought he saw something on a scan and wanted to do a brain biopsy. It was at this time that something clicked for me personally. This would be our last night in the hospital because we decided that we would leave against medical advice. Just like all ideas usually pop into my head, I realized that this ability was a gift from God. It never was me. All of my intelligence, all of the ideas and now the song that popped into my head was delivered to me by the almighty and it was only now that I realized that HE TOOK AWAY HER SIGHT SO “I” COULD SEE. We left the next morning and went home and prayed and cried and prepared for this life that was before us. My adoring wife would never look upon my face again. She would have to hold to the memories and we would create new ones. I started reading to her and I purchased books on tape. She loved for me to read because I would always get into character and the Bill Cosby voice she loved the most. We never got depressed. We accepted what God had planned for us and felt it was his will. Then one day it happened again. I was reading a funny story and using the Bill Cosby voice and my wife’s head jerked backwards and it did this several times. She later described it as very brightly colored lights one at a time shooting at her face. She said they looked like fingers. My wife’s eye sight was restored directly by the hand of God. Miracles only happen in the bible as far as I knew. Water got turned to wine, a small amount of bread and fish fed a multitude, and Lazarus was raised from the grave. But on that day, God gave us a testimony. He is real and that message stated by him taking away my wife’s sight so that we all could see his glory when he restored her sight when no doctor could do it. Shannon went on to graduate valedictorian from nursing school a year after I finished and now years in, we know that it is not our individual effort but God who makes all these things happen for us and we can provide a direct testimony to it. It is these motivating factors that drive me to create for the woman who I thought would never look upon my face again and can now read these words and all else that I create for her. taRNished my debut novel is dedicated to Shannon Eureka Stewart. 24 years my wife, soul mate for life.

Excerpt

“Here you go, Stephen, a small flush of the Neosynephrine drip and your blood pressure will normalize more quickly, and then your family can see you all the sooner.”

Dale had seen more experienced nurses give mini-boluses of powerful meds before, so this couldn't be much different, right? He made the injection, and upon flushing a mere five cc’s of normal saline into the Neosynephrine IV line, Stephen’s blood pressure skyrocketed to 265 over 190!

Beep-beep-beep-beep-beeeeeep! Alarms began chiming all around them. Dale felt his chest tighten and his throat go dry. What was wrong, what had happened? He couldn’t have done anything wrong. In an attempt to keep the incident a private matter from the other nurses, he hit the silence button on the alarms and erased the blood pressure reading. Okay, he now had time to think, but he had to make it fast. What could he do to bring the blood pressure back down?

Dale scanned the room; he didn’t have time to race to the medication room. He snatched up another syringe of saline and flushed five cc’s of the cardizem drip in an attempt to fix the problem. Stepping back from the bed, he watched the monitors, and waited.

“Come on, Stephen, come on down,” he whispered.

Dale continued to wait; his eyes glued to the displays. For a few minutes, time seemed to slow down; Dale watched as the line of the heart monitor slowly arced up and down. The pulse counter and BP readings clicked off their numbers. Then, quite abruptly, his pressure started to come back down, and Dale felt as if his pressure could come down. It took a moment, but he also realized that he’d been holding his breath.

Dale opened his mouth and inhaled deeply. “Oh, you had me worried there for a minute, Stephen. Actually, a couple minutes! But, it looks like we’re out of the woods now.”

Yet, it appeared Dale’s joy was short-lived.

Stephen did not wake up; he remained unstable for the whole night and into the next morning.

Eri Nelson

Guest Post and Excerpt by Eri Nelson

Who Are You Really?

“The night had been long and it untimely drew her to seek sleep. As she had wandered the floors of her nightly routine, it was a different face that followed her to bed. However, now as she stood awake and in front of the looking glass she screeched with horror as the crows had landed around her eyes.”
~Eri~

It is a matter of night and day, as to how we see ourselves. Course this is all reliant on the lighting as well (smirking).

I wrote a previous blog post that left me weary of those voices who shouted so loud that my written words could no longer be heard. However, on reflection those deafening sounds ran from my own tone. (she giggles) Yes, it was words from a screen that had me screaming inside. Although now I realize that, it was a wakeup call to how I wish other to see myself without having to explaining myself later. When I say later, I mean after they have read one of my books (evil wink).

It was with a more well treaded temperament that I launched a new look into my site Dearharts.com. Here you will be able to really read about the author. I whip out no disguises, for here you will see the true face behind the words.

Thank you for allowing me this time with you and your readers. It has been a pleasure.

With the Grimoire in hand Izzy stated as if talking to the book as if she would any other, “It’s not safe for you.” In response, the book glowed and vanished from her grasp.

The odor was far more potent than her first stumble upon their type. At this point, she was sure that this would be her second run in with this kind. Since she had not encountered it while searching for their The Cursed visitor, Tempest, she was confident these were a different kind of being. More importantly, she was positive that Arnost as well as her sister were keeping yet another secret from her. If she were able to get through this she would be certain to ask this time what were the ones known as blood mad?

Instead of a shaded moon to guide her way, Izzy had the evening sun setting to light up the horizon. It would be a lighted display compared to her last encounter.

As the crest of a head emerged, Izzy chose to duck behind one of the many discarded vehicles on Arnost’s junkyard’s front. She had expected merely one but from her crouch position, she could now see many shapes approaching. This would perhaps be a blood bath. With whose blood she was not sure of. Izzy only hoped it would not be her’s.

Finally close enough for her vision to take in the whole scene Izzy stumbled falling on her derrière.

“Holy crap, It’s a Thriller video and me without a red jacket!”

Like in true Izzy form, she chuckled at her warped sense of humor. Yeah, laughing when she is scared out of her mind is always her first call to action. The second is to kick some zombie ass.

Their step was slurred and staggered. Although they did not come at a great speed, their decayed bodies moved on with a definite determined ever-demanding need. Halting as many as Izzy could with her new ability to freeze. The new power it seemed could halt to a point in time around her chosen subject. Leaving them immobilized while time cruelly moved by around them. So far, Izzy had learned she could freeze a room of standing still humans. While slow moving, of what she could only assume to call, zombies were a bit harder to master.

This was starting to become a full workout. A half summersault over a rotten corpse with a back twist over another and she was beginning to sweat. Then as if a prayer to her calls Arnost appeared and shouting as, he approached…

“Don’t waste your energy trying to freeze them all. You have to burn them. Its fire or the blood of the one they track to halt them. Hurry now and bring the lighting forth and burn the hell out of them.”

This pain was something in the future she hoped would lessen but as of now it hurt like no other. Calling the electric force forth through her body, it began to break the flesh of her fingers. Just as she could feel the blood pour from her, she aimed her strikes toward the walking dead. Laying a strong, enough charge to set them burning as their hollow forms still tried to move forth.

When once slowing to a halt Izzy turned to view the horrors of the yard. Much of the ground lay littered with scorched spots. What was not blackened by the flames, still burned on with rotten flesh caught in the remaining blazes’ grasp. The scene looking much like Hell had moved above ground.

Top 5 Reasons to Fall in Love with Alena
According to Alena

  1. I'm strong, physically and mentally

  2. Some people say I'm stunning to look at but I'm not one of them

  3. I love with all my heart possibly even when I should walk away I continue to hold on believing that Love will Conquer All

  4. I've put up with a lot crap from the Olympians the last several years and bested them at each turn even though I'm just a 'lowly' Fey

  5. My husband, Ares God of War, says I'm the best lover he's ever had. Considering his age and his voracious sexual appetite, I consider that a very high compliment.

WOMEN OF WAR-BOOK #5 IN THE OF WAR SERIES

EXCERPT:

As they neared it, the front gate opened to reveal Cernunnos standing there waiting impatiently. "I see you've decided to be smart about this," he crooned.

"Not so fast ya bastard," Norman shot. "You want my daughter? You'll have to fight me for her." He unsheathed his sword to brandish it bravely at the Great Horned God.

Maggie's fluttering heart skipped several beats. "Da! No!" She tugged on his arm as hard as she could trying to pull him back toward the gate that was suddenly closing. "No, he'll kill you!" Then Maggie understood why he brought her out here. If he won, she'd see his great victory and know she didn't have to be afraid any longer. But, if he lost, Cernunnos wouldn't go storming through the village to get to her, killing and wounding every person he came across as he went. She stopped pulling and fell quiet. "No."

Norman kept his eyes on Cernunnos even as he sank to his knees to plant a kiss on her cheek. "Go over there, stay out of the way, girl."

"I love you, Da."

"I love you too, now go."

Wiping away a tear, Maggie sprinted away from the emerging battleground to stand near the cold stone wall surrounding the castle and its small village of angry citizens.

Cernunnos clasped his hands to his bare chest and over his heart as he sighed and shook his head. "How touching." He feigned wiping a tear from the corner of his eye as he let out another mocking sigh. "Mortals, you're always so sentimental." With an icy glower, the cloudless night sky began to stir as clouds thickened, blocking out the sparkling stars. He raised the Staff of Life and pointed it at Norman.

"Why don'ya do it like a man?" Norman challenged as he stood straight, tall and proud with his chest jutting out bravely and the thick muscles of his arms standing at attention. He waited but Cernunnos didn't answer him so Norman taunted him further. "Oh that's right, you're not a man, you're an unholy abomination. A cowardly one at that, pickin' on little girls."

While finding the offer tempting, Cernunnos found Norman's defiance distasteful and egotistical. That made the irate father an unworthy opponent. Letting a shockingly bright ball of energy fly from the tip of the staff, he smirked. "That wasn't part of the bargain." Norman tried to evade it but he was too slow and the Great Horned God took off his head with one blow. The headless body of Norman MacLeod, sword still in hand, crashed to the grassy land just outside the safety of the Castle MacLeod as his head rolled down the hill toward the babbling brook.

In unison, inside the castle looking out from a high window where Elizabeth watched her husband fall and outside the castle where Maggie stood not ten feet away, they both screamed out in anguish; "NO!" Elizabeth fled down the stairs on weak legs as Maggie ran to her fallen father on legs just as weak. She fell to her knees next to him, threw her little body over him and began weeping as she held onto his lifeless hand.

About the Author:

I've been married for the last 27 years to my wonderful husband and incredibly talented musician & rockin' DJ, Roy. We live in my hometown of New London, CT where we have raised two beautiful daughters to adulthood.

My writing career began in junior high, around the 7th grade. A fact that my fellow students adored but often got me called down to the Guidance Counselor's Office to discuss the adult nature of my early stories. While the experience was never pleasant, I was not deterred by the counselors' worries I was spurred onward by them, as well as by my teachers, and my classmates, I continued to hone my craft throughout those formative years.

Through my full-length novels and series I bring conflict, passion, love, and suspense to unique couples--how about a Greek God and a Fae, a retiring military man and an aging widowed hippie, a famous writer/director and a lonely hitch-hiker, or a b-grade actor and a very lucky first-time author? Since I'm never one to shy away from the less pleasant things in life, indeed I believe that it is in the Darkness where Character is created, determined, and defined, my heroes and heroines have their love tested by demons from within and without.

To date, I have penned some 14 novels and 30+ short stories. All of my books and stories are filled with steamy sex, hot passion, dark intrigue, and nail biting suspense. ALL of my works are intended for a Mature Audience Only this includes most of my non-fiction books. My books are for those who like their reading on the gritty side. They are not intended for the faint of heart or those who enjoy a sweet read.

Also, being a Pagan (which is helpful when I write about the Ancient Gods!) I've penned a few useful guides for Ritual Sex/Love Magick and for those wanting to start out exploring Magickal Herbalism.

Remy is the type of guy- well, Deamhan, that you wouldn't want to bring home to your mother, unless you wanted him to eat her.

As a Lamia Deamhan, violence is part of his nature. At the same time he loves to play the typical "nice guy." Females are instantly attracted to him and he uses his charm to induce them. Once they're head over heels and dangling from the tips of his cold fingers, he kills them, nice and slow.

His current obsession is Veronica, a human who recently arrived in the city on the search for answers to her mother's disappearance. She's number one on his "to seduce" list.

Veronica cleared her head free from thoughts and waited for the burning sensation to start but it never came. Instead Remy placed his finger in front of her mouth to quiet her.

“Shhh,” he said in a faint whisper that she heard underneath the music. Their dancing tempo increased while he dragged her along the dance floor.

“Let me go,” she pleaded to him.

“Do you think I’m going to hurt you?” he asked her in a soft voice. “And I thought I made a great first impression on you.”

She remained quiet.

“Would you care to join me at the bar? They have two for ones.” His brown hair was still pulled back in a ponytail. The smell of his new black leather jacket and expensive cologne radiated from him.

“Care to join me?”

“What do you want?”

They continued to dance across to the opposite end of the floor. He placed his hand behind her head and gently pressed her face in his chest. She felt his hard and cold body through his shirt. Her head began to throb slightly, and his words dilated sensually in her brain.

I want you.

What she wanted was to run from him, to break free through the crowd and toward the exit.

“I just want to get to know you more,” he replied. “You ran out unexpectedly.”

“I don’t like being threatened,” Veronica said.

He pulled her along the dance floor, spinning her around. He placed his hands back on her hips, and they continued their dark jig. “Sorry if I made you feel uncomfortable. That wasn’t my intention.”

“Then what is your intention?” she questioned.

He moved her in closer. “Like I said, to get to know you.” His body was lean, tight, and his muscles flexed when he moved his arms. “If I thought you were such a threat, you’d be dead already.” Small, loosened strands of his hair dangled, slightly touching her forehead.

Veronica suddenly felt infatuated with him. Concentrate, Veronica. He looked into her eyes, and she tried to look away. She felt her eyes drift to them and she wanted to rub her hands over his chest and up to his face.

Everything she knew about Deamhans disappeared from her mind. She left herself open to him, voluntarily pressing her face into his chest. She closed her eyes and opened her ears, hoping that he would exhale just once. He appeared different from her; not human. He became all she knew and all she wanted. No fear, no Deamhan, no Dark Sepulcher, and no search.

Yes. There was a search.

She blinked her eyes, refocusing back on reality and distancing herself from Remy’s orchestrated trance.

“You’re not scaring me.” Veronica’s lower lip quivered.

He chuckled slightly. “I’m not the one you should be scared of.” His grip began to wane. They stopped moving and she took a step back, free from his hypnotic restraint. He turned and walked away casually through the crowd. The rhythm of the music changed, and the dance floor started filling with people. She watched Remy sit on a bar stool and she glanced around, sensing her vulnerability while alone.

She followed him to the bar.

“I know how you Deamhan act.” She stood behind him. “And I know I can never trust a Deamhan.” Her mind reverted to the woman at the burnt home. Maybe he was working with her? Remy soon picked up on her thought.

“No.” Remy turned around and ordered a drink from the bartender. “I don’t have any minions.” He turned back to her. “If you want, you can be my first.”

Confused, she shook her head no.

The bartender returned, placing a glass in front of him.

“You’re right, you can never trust a Deamhan researcher. I don’t even trust Deamhan.”

Veronica sat on an empty stool next to him. He continued to look forward and sipped the dark liquid from his cup.

He was a Ramanga or maybe a Lamia. Either way, he can’t be trusted.

“I’m not a Ramanga,” he replied to her thoughts. “But I am a Lamia.”

Lamia. They had no sharp teeth like the Ramanga, but fed from their victims by mouth. As long as I don’t kiss him.

“Do you always do that?” he asked her.

“Do what?”

“Let me give you some advice, researcher,” Remy said slowly, “if you plan to hide your thoughts, you shouldn’t think. You should just ‘do’.” He sipped his drink and he looked forward, observing a female waitress from across the bar staring back at them. Remy briefly waved at her and she nodded.

“You see her?” He nodded to the waitress. “She’ll be my first meal of the night.” He placed his cup up to his lips and before taking another sip he spoke again. “And the other human behind her, near the back standing alone. She’ll be my second.”

Charles OKeefe

An Interview and excerpt by Charles O'Keefe...

‘I’ve been waiting for you,’ the stunning redhead purred, turning from the bar to face him. She had not told him her name, but he felt as if he’d known her all his life. Her pale beauty gave her an ethereal softness, and her catlike eyes glowed with subtle power that drew him to her. She wanted him...

Grabbing the worn metal handle on the heavy wooden door of Bitters Tavern, Joseph O’Reily rolled his eyes toward the dusky fall sky and snorted at his lame fantasy. Yeah, right. Like that’s really going to happen to me, here in a pub in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

He had replayed that familiar scene in his mind almost every time he came to Bitters, and in the last five years while attending Memorial University, he’d come here a lot. His little fantasy hadn’t come true yet – not even close – and he was quite sure it never would. But that didn’t stop him from enjoying some innocent role-playing, where he starred opposite a beautiful redheaded woman enamored of him. He had pretty much accepted this was the only way he was likely to get lucky – in his dreams.

He walked into Bitters and eased the door closed behind him. The warm dark wood reminded him of a cabin deep in the forest, and the familiar smell of beer and French fries gave him the cozy feeling of being at home. Bitters wasn’t the typical hook-up spot that played annoying loud music. Instead, the proprietor offered activities like movie night that Joseph actually enjoyed. In fact, movie night was the reason he’d come in after finishing classes and assignments this afternoon, and making a quick trip to check on his parents’ house and take care of the cat while they were vacationing in Florida. Now he had the rest of the evening to himself. He sucked in a deep, satisfying breath and turned, surveying the bar. Then he saw her.

His cozy feeling disappeared, replaced by a jolt of excitement stabbing his chest. He’d been coming to Bitters at least once a week since he’d started school, but had never seen her before.

There she sat, alone at the bar, stirring her drink with her index finger, her fabulous flowing red hair haloed in the bar lights like a crown of fire. He considered just walking up to her and saying hello, but quickly dismissed the idea. While he had become more outgoing in the past few years, he was still shy, and previous experiences approaching strange women in bars had consistently resulted in dismal failure. He just wasn’t smooth enough like some other guys. Despite the allure of this woman, he wasn’t in the mood for another rejection.

* * * * *

Even before the door opened, she sensed his feelings rolling off him in waves – loneliness, boredom, rejection, and inadequacy. His quaint little fantasy of meeting a ravishing redhead at the bar was endearing ... and perhaps prophetic.

As he entered the bar and looked around, she dipped her finger in her drink, absently stirring it. Without looking directly at him, she saw him clearly with her superior vision. She felt that instant when he noticed her, and she suppressed a smile.

In the last ten years that she’d been keeping tabs on him, he’d improved tremendously, growing to be a handsome man – tall with dark hair and dark brown eyes. But at twenty-three, he still lacked the confidence to forge meaningful relationships with others, especially women. He always felt different, isolated. She could certainly relate to that.

Still, she’d known for some time there was something special about him, something that drew her to him. He had the connection to her that the others did not, a connection to her blood and her past. He possessed strength of character, and his behavior consistently revealed a genteel kindness to all living things. She knew he would fall desperately in love with her and defend her with his very life, if need be. And it could come to that, sooner than she suspected. After nearly two hundred years of running, she couldn’t stay safely hidden for very long before that controlling bastard would find her again. She pressed her lips together, dismissing thoughts of him.

Casually she sipped her drink as Joseph walked by, pretending he didn’t see her. She smiled. Watching him for a decade had required careful planning and effort. She didn’t want to rush things – this was too important to be left to chance or whim – but she was running out of time. He was the right one, and he was ready. Tonight she would give him the incredible gift he deserved. And she would finally have the mate she deserved.

Book Description:

Like every other geek alive, Newfoundland native Joseph O’Reily secretly wants to be a superhero. At thirteen he fantasized about being a vampire, and ten years later he’s still fantasizing – but mostly about a beautiful redheaded woman who has eyes only for him. The one thing different about Joseph’s adult fantasy is that, amazingly, it comes true one night when he goes to a local university pub. Cassandra Snow, literally the woman of his dreams, invites him to her place for an evening of personal pleasure. Of course he’s not going to say no. But when strange things start happening afterward, Joseph quickly learns that not all dreams should come true.

Join me in welcoming Charles O'Keefe to Cloey's Book Reviews and Other Stuff today. He stopped by to discuss The Newfoundland Vampire. Welcome and thank you for sharing your writing process with us.

Cloey: When did you become interested in writing?

Charles: Great question! First off I wanted to say thanks for having me for this interview, they are always fun. Well I dabbled in writing when I was 13, mostly making up video games that never amount to anything. Then in high school I wrote some poetry for the local paper (I don’t know if they ever got published) back then it was just a way to express feelings of frustration, anger, resentment and loneliness (don’t worry I’m a lot a happier now). Any kind of serious writing didn’t start until I was in university and I wrote movie and music reviews for the university paper (some of those were published). I used to play video games a lot and I would credit my English teacher in Grade 8, Fabian was his name, for getting me more interested in comic books and later writing.

Cloey: What inspired you to write
The Newfoundland Vampire?

Charles: This will sound terribly clichéd but a friend put out a book and once I saw he could do it that encouraged me. To be honest though that was only the start of writing a book, I didn’t finished it until another friend encouraged me several times and finally I just made up my own mind that I had a story to tell and a message to give to the world.

Cloey: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Charles: Okay I’ll admit I read the next question but I couldn’t resist a lead in. I do have a message, I wanted to have a double one, first that most people are not entirely good or evil, most of us (I believe) are shades of grey. Second that we are not defined by our nature (whether that is socio-economic background, for this story being a vampire or whatever happened in your past or in your DNA) and that it is our choices that define us and ultimately we are responsible for our own actions and the consequences they bring.

Cloey: Who was your favorite character and who was your least favorite character to develop and why?

Charles: I love Cassandra; she was the first character that I wrote that really felt alive to me, like a real person. I can always imagine how she will act in any situation and I would really love to meet someone at least a little like her in real life. When I finished book one I immediately wanted to see what would happen to her next and I hope the reader will feel the same.

Least favorite, another excellent question, hmm I suppose that would be Thomas. He is a sniveling, pathetic vampire who was only written to serve some plot points. Generally I like the study of evil and therefore like my villains but aside from one action scene Thomas was the one I got the least enjoyment writing and the least interesting character in the book.

Cloey: What did you enjoy most about writing
The Newfoundland Vampire?

Charles: Imagining a scene and then writing it on the page (or screen) is an incredible feeling. Just bringing characters and ideas in my head to life is a lot of fun. Getting excited (or emotionally invested) in a scene as you write it is also a wonderful and sometimes unexpected pleasure.

Cloey: What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing the story to life?

Charles: Being my first book there were many. Editing obviously, I have an excellent editor who thankfully has a great deal of patience and understanding. As I wrote a story that dealt a lot with feelings and events in my own life (Joseph is highly based on me) I became personally invested in the story, this was a mistake and it took me time to realize that the story had to work on its own merits. After that there was the standard stuff, i.e. many drafts, I believe there was 16 drafts in total. I did a fair bit of research on the internet and I was lucky enough to be on vacation visiting two places I wrote about while completing the novel.

Of course writing takes a lot of time and I’ll admit to getting a little obsessive (my wife didn’t appreciate that). I find I need to be in a writing mindset and I am most creative in the morning, this means getting up early and writing at least 5 days a week, real life (like working full-time) can obviously get in the way.

Finally I found that I went overboard describing mundane details, I am forever grateful to my editor, family and friends for helping me to spice the story up and adding some much needed action and intrigue.

Cloey: What are you working on now?

Charles: Right now I am waiting to hear back from my editor on the rough draft of The Newfoundland Vampire book 2 (tentatively called “Killer on the Road) so in the meantime I am working a screenplay for a fan-made Star Trek series a friend of mine directs (and I’m lucky enough to star in).

Cloey: What do you like to read in your free time?

Charles: I am in love with “The Walking Dead” comic books and I read every issue the day it comes out. Primarily I like to read sci-fi/fantasy/horror novels or short stories but I do also enjoy some non-fiction and sometimes humor.

Cloey: Share with us something about yourself that we wouldn't see in your bio or on any other blogs (this can be anything from the type of music you like, your favorite color, or even your favorite meal - share whatever you want your fans to know about you)

Charles
: Hmm well I guess not everyone would know that my favorite food is oranges, I often have 10 or more a week and will only eat clementine’s or any other kind you can peel with your fingers.

Thanks again, great questions and it was a pleasure to be here!

Cloey: Thank you so much for sharing with us today and I am looking forward to reading The Newfoundland Vampire. This one is on my To-Be-Read list I recommend that you place it on yours too.
