Jayson Livingston

The Harbinger by Jayson Livingston ...

“Just finished it, phenomenal read! Comparable to early Michael Connelly's stuff but darker. I look forward to his next one.”

“An exciting murder mystery with shades of CSI. Once I started to read I could not put it down. Now I have to catch up on some sleep. Authentic sounding dialog, interesting characters, and lots of twists. The accurate descriptions make you feel like you are there in rural northern California. Lots of action, good police work and character development. I look forward to the next novel by this author.”

Excerpt:

“CHP is chasing a light-colored van.”

“Oh, snap!” Harlow followed Lane out of the office and into the unit parked near the front door.

They slammed the doors as Lane gunned the gas, lights and siren wailing, skidding out of the parking lot.

They strapped in and Lane turned up the radio.

It came to life almost immediately. “Plumas two-two-one, I’m with CHP. We’re still east bound seventy.”

“We’re a long ways off,” Lane said. He had the patrol car at over a hundred MPH and gritted his teeth as the unit slid into a turn. He passed two motor homes and a logging truck. “This would be the suck if it was mid July and the road was filled with tourists.”

Harlow nodded as he held onto the dashboard and ceiling watching Lane negotiate the many turns with ease and skill.

“Nine-oh-one, nine-oh-one,” Junior screamed into the radio. “Suspect vehicle ran CHP off the road! Start an ambulance to Highway Seventy, near Top Hat Road.” There was a long pause, and then, “We’re now west bound Highway Seventy.”

Lane nodded. “They’re heading toward us.”

At over a hundred miles an hour, Lane closed the twenty-four miles from Quincy to the Highway 70/89 junction in a mere thirteen minutes.

Lane slid the patrol car sideways to a stop at the junction of 70 and 89. Plumes of white smoke hung in the air like a thick mist. “Plumas two-two-nine I’m set up at the junction.”

“We’ll be there in a minute, Lane,” Junior said, adding, “We’re hitting speeds of over a hundred miles an hour.”

“Two-two-eight, I’m with two-two-nine.”

Lane saw Mitch coming north bound on 89. He slid to a stop near Lane’s unit.

Two CHP units coming in from the west joined the roadblock and Harlow mumbled, “I feel like I’m in a cheap seventies trucker movie.” He pulled the shotgun mounted between the front seats of the patrol car and cranked the beaver tail.

The pursuit crested the hill to the east and started down the quarter mile grade to the junction. Lane could see the flashing light bars and wig-wags of the two units. Sirens screamed in all directions.

For years to come, Lane would explain what happened next as one of the most surreal moments he had ever encountered.

The sound of a big rig’s Jake brake thumped, deafening Lane momentarily. He glanced behind him and saw the logging truck, payload heavy, trying to stop as he rounded the bend in the road. The big rig jackknifed, dropping its load. Sounds of huge pine logs hitting the pavement with thundering force echoed around them. The van was on them as the massive logs bounced down the highway. A log slammed into a CHP unit, pushing it on its side. A second log hit the undercarriage, forcing the car onto its roof. The CHP officers ran for cover on the north shoulder of the highway. A third log, smaller in diameter, punched through the back window of the second CHP car.

Lane and Harlow, close enough to their vehicle, jumped into the car, Lane slamming the gearshift into reverse and backing up into a dirt field to the south, avoiding the herd of rolling, bouncing timber.

The radio was full of chatter, units stepping on each other as each tried to convey what was happening.

Sliding left, trying to make the turn onto Highway 89, the van went onto two wheels as both Junior and the CHP unit slid past the van and into a dirt field, Junior fighting the fishtail.

Clouds of dust made visibility zero. Lane put the car in drive and drove into the wall of dust. Then they were spun; someone clipped the ass end of the patrol car. He hit the gas and cleared the dust cloud. Mitch’s voice came on the radio. “We’re west bound on Little Bear Road, heading for the Ranger Station.”

Junior was slamming through the deeper end of the dirt field, when steam billowed from the unit, rendering Junior out of the pursuit.

Lane saw the van and Mitch drop out of sight down Little Bear Road and punched the unit’s gas, saying, “Hang on!”

He rocketed past Junior’s unit, hitting two large dips, causing them to bang their heads on the roof.

“Jesus Christ!” Harlow yelled as Lane cleared the field, his tires catching traction on the pavement.

“We’re approaching Mohawk Highway,” Mitch said.

Lane was closing fast and saw the van slide into a brick retaining wall, careen off, and rocket toward the intersection.

Description

What was once the United States has become a savage post-apocalyptic environment where the worst of the worst prosper and the remaining good hide.

Seven characters in different parts of the United States must adapt to this new environment. The “fight or flight” mentality plays into the story, as the nation is divided into factions fighting for control of the country. The government is outnumbered, outgunned, and forced into hiding as well to recoup their forces.

The novel pits these characters, the elements, and each other with lives intertwining on opposite sides of the war effort. One character's quest for revenge could jeopardize not only the war outcome but the reshaping of the entire nation.

What these characters don't realize, is the terrifying evil making its way across the ocean.
Mr. Reyes was a guest on the Blog Talk Radio show, "Other Worlds of Romance" and we have the recording here! Listen to a chapter from his debut novel Aftermath.

Author Bio

Joe Reyes has never been afraid to go for what he wants in life. His goal is to be a full-time published author and is taking all the steps necessary to make that dream a reality. He hates when he hears about people who give up on their dreams.

His writing style is fast paced. When he wrote his novel Aftermath, he wanted it to feel like a television show. Joe doesn’t like boring descriptions. He finds filler scenes to be a book killer and makes sure that every chapter has an immediate purpose or a purpose later on.

On the eve of her high school graduation, proper socialite Francesca “Frankie” Fairholm rebelled against her elitist and controlling family to pursue the dark lifestyle of a contract killer for the enigmatic Osiris Corporation. Years later, with her training complete, she believes she's doomed to the life of a sociopathic lone gun until a botched hit brings two unlikely allies, her cousins Addison and Katharine.

Using Katharine’s etiquette school, Elegance, Inc., as a front, the trio weave through Frankie’s dark underworld, carrying out contracts, drinking too much wine, and trying not to get each other killed.

Trouble follows the team home when the death of the cruel Fairholm matriarch reveals more than they ever wanted to know about their family. As the funeral preparations play out, the trio begin to realize there is much more to their employer than meets the eye and their family connections run deeper than they ever imagined.

Review

Frankie's family is a mess no wonder she grew up into a sociopath. Francesca Fairholm is the black sheep of her family but this story doesn’t even end with her issues. The entire family has issues! Appearance is everything in the Fairholm family and money rules and this makes an interesting tension between family members. This is a 5 out of 5 star story that I am looking forward to reading again.

What I liked about Elegantly Wasted was the story telling of C. Elizabeth Vescio. Her story is written in a conversational way – which I enjoy. There were times when I felt like I was listening to a friend telling me about something that happened during her weekend.

The characters are well developed and easy to relate to as well. I especially loved the story of Frankie's 16th birthday and still giggle when I think about that plastic lobster bib...WTH??

I would have liked to read more about other family members just to see if there were any normal people in Frankie's family. And I felt like the book was too short. There are funny scenes in this story – I found myself laughing at parts that should have been serious. But maybe they were written to be funny?

This book should go on your To Be Read list because it is a good story for a long weekend. I found myself liking the contract killer named Frankie and her crazy cousins.

ABOUT C. ELIZABETH VESCIO:

Author C. Elizabeth Vescio likes to play in the dark world of cynicism and death. Her first novel, Elegantly Wasted touched on the demented and humorous side of a delightfully dysfunctional family.

She enjoys cynical debates, cupcakes, making her mother-in-law sew her aprons that she never wears, zombies, the Fifth Element and Tomb Raider. She gathers her life inspirations from Neil Gaiman, Julia Child and Paul Simon. When she isn't out photographing her next project, she's studying color, concept and design or writing stuff down in hopes it makes sense one day... or she's on Pinterest.

She lives in Las Vegas with her husband and three dogs.

Eri Nelson

Guest Post and Excerpt by Eri Nelson

Who Are You Really?

“The night had been long and it untimely drew her to seek sleep. As she had wandered the floors of her nightly routine, it was a different face that followed her to bed. However, now as she stood awake and in front of the looking glass she screeched with horror as the crows had landed around her eyes.”
~Eri~

It is a matter of night and day, as to how we see ourselves. Course this is all reliant on the lighting as well (smirking).

I wrote a previous blog post that left me weary of those voices who shouted so loud that my written words could no longer be heard. However, on reflection those deafening sounds ran from my own tone. (she giggles) Yes, it was words from a screen that had me screaming inside. Although now I realize that, it was a wakeup call to how I wish other to see myself without having to explaining myself later. When I say later, I mean after they have read one of my books (evil wink).

It was with a more well treaded temperament that I launched a new look into my site Dearharts.com. Here you will be able to really read about the author. I whip out no disguises, for here you will see the true face behind the words.

Thank you for allowing me this time with you and your readers. It has been a pleasure.

With the Grimoire in hand Izzy stated as if talking to the book as if she would any other, “It’s not safe for you.” In response, the book glowed and vanished from her grasp.

The odor was far more potent than her first stumble upon their type. At this point, she was sure that this would be her second run in with this kind. Since she had not encountered it while searching for their The Cursed visitor, Tempest, she was confident these were a different kind of being. More importantly, she was positive that Arnost as well as her sister were keeping yet another secret from her. If she were able to get through this she would be certain to ask this time what were the ones known as blood mad?

Instead of a shaded moon to guide her way, Izzy had the evening sun setting to light up the horizon. It would be a lighted display compared to her last encounter.

As the crest of a head emerged, Izzy chose to duck behind one of the many discarded vehicles on Arnost’s junkyard’s front. She had expected merely one but from her crouch position, she could now see many shapes approaching. This would perhaps be a blood bath. With whose blood she was not sure of. Izzy only hoped it would not be her’s.

Finally close enough for her vision to take in the whole scene Izzy stumbled falling on her derrière.

“Holy crap, It’s a Thriller video and me without a red jacket!”

Like in true Izzy form, she chuckled at her warped sense of humor. Yeah, laughing when she is scared out of her mind is always her first call to action. The second is to kick some zombie ass.

Their step was slurred and staggered. Although they did not come at a great speed, their decayed bodies moved on with a definite determined ever-demanding need. Halting as many as Izzy could with her new ability to freeze. The new power it seemed could halt to a point in time around her chosen subject. Leaving them immobilized while time cruelly moved by around them. So far, Izzy had learned she could freeze a room of standing still humans. While slow moving, of what she could only assume to call, zombies were a bit harder to master.

This was starting to become a full workout. A half summersault over a rotten corpse with a back twist over another and she was beginning to sweat. Then as if a prayer to her calls Arnost appeared and shouting as, he approached…

“Don’t waste your energy trying to freeze them all. You have to burn them. Its fire or the blood of the one they track to halt them. Hurry now and bring the lighting forth and burn the hell out of them.”

This pain was something in the future she hoped would lessen but as of now it hurt like no other. Calling the electric force forth through her body, it began to break the flesh of her fingers. Just as she could feel the blood pour from her, she aimed her strikes toward the walking dead. Laying a strong, enough charge to set them burning as their hollow forms still tried to move forth.

When once slowing to a halt Izzy turned to view the horrors of the yard. Much of the ground lay littered with scorched spots. What was not blackened by the flames, still burned on with rotten flesh caught in the remaining blazes’ grasp. The scene looking much like Hell had moved above ground.
