Description:

Emotionally scarred by personal tragedy, Tori Morgan needs to get away from Houston and figure out what to do with her life. Seeking refuge and time to think, she accepts a position at a remote ranch in Montana. Firmly convinced love happens once in a lifetime, she resigns herself to being alone.

Her new boss is the first complication in her plan. Mesmerized by his voice on the phone, she arrives at their first meeting with a mixture of anticipation and dread.

And rightfully so. Six feet four inches of man capped off with a potent sexuality that makes clear thinking difficult, Wade McBride wreaks havoc on her emotions from the start. To make matters worse, she discovers she must pretend to be his fiancée for the sake of her new patient.

Wade needed a nurse for his mother but got more than he bargained for in Tori. She was a breath of fresh air in world full of crap. Pretending to be in love with her seemed like a good idea at the time.

The plan started out easy enough, even as they try to ignore the instant, heady desire percolating between them, unware of danger watching from the shadows.

The test kiss changes everything.

Once was not enough for Wade. Every inch of him craved more. But it isn’t real, it’s pretend. Right?

Tori is convinced his mouth should be registered as a lethal weapon. His kisses are electric, his voice seductive. Her body begs for his touch…but is she ready for this? Will she ever be ready?

They dance around the elephant in the room until they have to face the facts…what happens when make believe becomes real?

Excerpt

Tori glanced at the outstretched hand and reached for her purse. She didn’t bother to glance at the photo as she passed it over; didn’t need to. Her mind’s eye provided a vivid picture. Wind-blown ebony hair, streaks of grey at the temples. Strong, defined cheekbones anchored by heavy brows. Sky blue eyes framed by killer lashes. And his mouth. Oh God. What was it about his mouth that intrigued her so?

Full lips parted in a sexy smile that lit up his face and made her breath catch. She gave herself a mental shake and tried to focus on the task at hand. “His sister sent it. He’s the one on the left. The other one is his late brother, Isaac.”

“Holy-moly girlfriend! No wonder you can’t wait to go. Talk about your tall, dark and handsome. He’s what…six feet at least; bedroom eyes if ever I saw ‘em, come hither smile…daaa-yum! I bet he’s got a killer ass, too.”

“Sassy!” Tori reached for the picture but her friend moved away, still studying it.

“What did you say his name is?”

“Wade McBride.”

“Well, Mr. Wade McBride, you are one delicious lookin’ cowboy.” She made a show of fanning herself with the picture. “And I’d be on ‘at puppy like mornin’ glory on a fencepost.”

Her face grew warm and she shook her head. Sasha had a one track mind of late and did her best to get Tori on the same track.

“Damn. Damn. Damn!” She handed the picture back. “Sure you don’t want me to come along? You’re a bit out of practice you know, and he may be more than you can handle alone.”

“It’s nothing like that and you know it. It’s a job.”

“Yeah, well, it should be.” She rummaged through the contents of a dresser drawer and tossed a filmy nightgown at Tori. “Better take this along. Winter or not you’ll want it ‘fore this is over.”

“Good grief! Is sex all you think about?” She tossed the garment back to her and pulled out a pair of sweat pants.

“Hell yeah when I see a Timex man.”

Tori ducked her head and sighed. “I know I will regret this, but…a Timex man?”

Sasha giggled. “Think a can of RediWhip topping, some chocolate syrup…a strategically placed cherry.” She paused for effect. “And see if ‘at cowboy can take a lickin’ and keep on tickin’.”

Her face flamed as an image of McBride lathered in whipped topping and chocolate syrup formed. “Oh my God, Sasha! Where on earth do you come up with this stuff?” She extended her arm, palm up. “Never mind. I don’t want to know.”

“Trust me…one day you’ll thank me.”

“No. I won’t. Besides, he has a lot on his plate with his sister and mother both ill and the ranch. He needs a nurse, not a lover.”

“Says who?”

“Sassy, please.”

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again; you were too good for Eddie.” She waved her hand back and forth to silence Tori’s rebuke. “I know, I know, it’s wrong to speak ill of the dead. He was a good cop, a decent father, but a crummy, cheating husband.”

Tori sat on the edge of the bed and said nothing as her friend continued. “You’ve got the kindest heart of anyone I’ve ever known.” Sassy joined her on the bed, her smile reflective. ”I guess that explains why you put up with me all these years. And you have a capacity for caring I truly envy. It’s why you are such an awesome nurse. Well, that and the reasonably intelligent thing.”

Tori snorted. Sassy would never change. Thank God.

“I know you loved Eddie. I never understood why, but I know you did. But he’s gone, Tori. You need to let him go and love again.”

“I…I don’t know if I can. Every time I think about moving on, of getting involved with someone, I feel guilty. Like I’m…betraying him. I know it sounds silly to you but its how I feel.”

Sasha slid an arm around her shoulders and squeezed. “I don’t think it sounds silly at all. He was your husband and you loved him. But he’s gone.” She blew out a breath. “You’re my best friend in the whole world. I want you to be happy. I want to see your eyes smile again.”

“I know you do. And I appreciate that.” She leaned her head on her friend’s shoulder. “I’m not interested in a relationship right now.” She sighed. “I don’t think I even remember how to kiss anymore so a relationship is out of the question.”

Excerpt

Tony’s Coffee Bar

Emily diligently typed away on her laptop in “Tony’s Coffee Bar” while sipping her cappuccino. Tony wasn’t here today; he was probably overseeing one of his other four restaurants. Emily was too busy for chit-chat, anyway. She had a million emails to answer, most of which pertained to Assisi House. And she was trying to get a start on next year’s budget so she could take it to her accountant later in the week. She was seated at her favorite table next to the large plate glass window; it was easy to get distracted by the foot traffic passing by. You never knew what might happen in the big city of New York to either entertain or appall you.

But her concentration was broken by seeing Jim walk in the front door. “Well, there goes the next hour,” Emily thought to herself. Still, she loved seeing Jimmy. He had been her best friend for almost three years and they tended to communicate one way or another almost every day. After ordering his coffee, he came to join her and gave her a light kiss on her cheek.

“Hi Emmy, what’s up with my favorite do-gooder today?” said Jim with his boyish “Aren’t you happy I’m here?” smile.

“Just the usual. Staff stuff, money stuff, animal stuff, and the ever popular ‘what to wear to the gala’ stuff. I hate those kind of events and thanks again for agreeing to be my escort. The only saving grace is that this year they’re honoring Tony and you know I wouldn’t miss that for anything.”

“I do know. And I’m looking forward to it if only for the opportunity to see you wearing something other than jeans and a tee. Have the organizers locked in anyone yet to give the award speech?”

“Well, yes, it’s going to be the Cardinal.” A shadow passed over Emily’s face and Jim looked concerned also.

“I’m so sorry, Emmy, but what’s past is past. Don’t be upset. I’ll be there with you and watch out for you. Can I tell you some good news of mine that might cheer you up?”

“Of course, sweetie. And don’t worry about me. Time marches on, as the old saying goes. So what’s the news?”

“Well, today David Lancaster called me from London and he’s agreed to sign on for a year at the New Theater as co-star and director. Think of it, the most talented British stage actor of his generation will be part of my troupe. It’s quite a coup for us and the investors were thrilled when I told them. At last, all my plans to unshackle myself from L.A. are falling into place.”

“Jimmy, that’s wonderful!” said Emily and she leaned over and gave him a big hug. She was honestly happy for him and for a moment pushed her own issues aside. “I have a feeling big changes are going to be coming for both of us this year. And I’m resolved to make the most of them. Let’s drink to our futures.”

And they clinked their coffee cups together and smiled at each other.

Guest Post, Excerpt and Contest by Jana Richards

Dating at Work

Eight years after he leaves her at the altar, fate throws Tony back together with Olivia when they find themselves working at the same museum. In my humorous contemporary romantic novel, “There Goes the Groom”, working together ends happily for Tony and Olivia, but in real life, is dating at the workplace a good idea? As Careercast.com asks, is it more likely to lead to marriage or unemployment?

You probably know of people in your workplace who have dated, sometimes happily, but sometimes with disastrous results. After all, if you date a ‘civilian’ and you decide after a few dates that you can’t stand the sight of him, you can just break up. But if he works in the same office as you, you’re going to have maintain a professional relationship with him, which may be difficult if you now want to gouge his eyes out.

If workplace romances are fraught with peril, including potential unemployment, why do so many people take the plunge? According to Psychology Today, anywhere from 40 to 47% of employees have engaged in a workplace romance, with another 20% indicating that they would be open to having a romance at work. Psychology Today identifies four main reasons these romances are so prevalent:

Time. As individuals spend more time at work, it’s natural that they develop relationships. As one participant of the Psychology Today study says “That’s who you spend your time with [so] that’s the person you’re going to share the more intimate details of your life.”

Ease of Opportunity. The workplace fosters close working relationships. One participant of the study said: “I think because it’s convenient, honestly. You meet people and if you’re working in the same environment, you have common interests in terms of what you believe in.”

Similarity. People who enjoy the same kind of work naturally have things in common. Participants in the study “believed people engage in workplace romances because of the similarities they uncover by being with coworkers in a comfortable environment.”

The Hookup. Some workplace romances are driven by the desire to have a physical relationship. A participant described: “One three letter word: sex.”

It turns out that who you date at the office makes a difference as to how the rest of the staff treats you. Psychology Today reported that employees perceived coworkers dating superiors to be less credible than those dating peers. Also, employees indicated they would trust coworkers dating superiors less, feel less close to those coworkers, and lie to those coworkers more than colleagues dating peers.

If you decide to date a co-worker, even though you know the potential risks, here’s a few tips from Glamour.com to (hopefully) keep your hookup from turning into a disaster (read all the tips here):

If One of You Manages The Other, Just Don’t Date, PeriodDon’t date or sleep with your boss or subordinate. It puts both of you in an awkward (and fireable) position. If you really think this might be the love of your life, consider leaving your job before you start a relationship. If it’s just a fling you’re after, don’t do it.

Once It’s a Relationship, Go Public (to the necessary parties) ASAPIf you and a co-worker actually start dating, and plan on being a couple for a while, stop keeping it a secret. Tell your bosses/HR Representatives/whoever needs to know, and assure them that you’ll continue to keep your work life as professional as possible.

Your Career Comes FirstIf you’re wondering what behaviors are and aren’t okay when dating a co-worker, remember that your career comes first. Anything that might make you look unprofessional should be avoided, so never engage in public displays of affection, and don’t let your relationship become the center of office gossip.

Have you ever had an office romance? How did it end?

About the Author:

When Jana Richards read her first romance novel, she immediately knew two things: she had to commit the stories running through her head to paper, and they had to end with a happily ever after. She also knew she’d found what she was meant to do. Since then she’s never met a romance genre she didn’t like. She writes contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and historical romance set in World War Two, in lengths ranging from short story to full length novel. Just for fun, she throws in generous helpings of humor, and the occasional dash of the paranormal. Her paranormal romantic suspense “Seeing Things” was a 2008 EPPIE finalist.

In her life away from writing, Jana is an accountant/admin assistant, a mother to two grown daughters, and a wife to her husband Warren. She enjoys golf, yoga, movies, concerts, travel and reading, not necessarily in that order. She and her husband live in Winnipeg with their Pug/Terrier cross Lou and several unnamed goldfish. Jody Wallace

Guest Post by Jody Wallace

Let's talk about one of my favorite parts of writing: worldbuilding. Whether
you're writing a Southern-set romance, like I did in Kiss the Bride, or a
paranormal, an author still has to create an environment for her characters
to thrive in, an environment the reader can see, hear, taste, touch and
feel.

Worldbuilding is often easier to "spot" in fantasies and SF, another
favorite genre of mine. For example, in Diana Wynne Jones' Dark Lord of
Derkholm, citizens from our world can tour a nearby fantasy world in a novel
that is simultaneously clever, full of injokes, absorbing and romantic.
Before DLOD, Jones wrote The Tough Guide to Fantasyland, which would, in
effect, be a companion book a tourist might take with him or her into such a
fantasyland derived from Tolkien. That is a very visceral instance of
worldbuilding indeed!

Sometimes fictional worlds, through the skill of the author, come across as
so rich and real we feel like we've visited them ourselves...or we want to
visit them! I certainly feel like I've visited Tallwood, Tennessee, where
Kiss the Bride is set, and many of you may have as well. Then there are the
urban fantasies that take place in the here and now, yet a here and now that
has a secret world regular folks know nothing about.

For example, I would love to eat at the diner where Sookie Stackhouse works,
book a tour of the fauna and flora of Xanth, hitch a ride on the flying
carpet from David Brin's The Practice Effect, mind-meld with Robin Owens'
giant, intelligent cats in her Heart series (not to mention rub the tummies
of Linnea Sinclair's space-faring furzels), feel a "magic wave" flow over
the land in Magic Bites by Ilona Andrews, or take a class at Hogwarts and
hopefully not end up in the infirmary afterwards.

If you had two tickets to paradise, paradise being a literary landscape of
choice, where would you go and what would you pack in your bags?

Ellie Heller

An interview with Ellie Heller

An interview with Ellie Heller...

Cloey: When did you become interested in writing?

Ellie: I've been writing bits of stories and character sketches for as long as I can remember.

Cloey: What inspired you to write A Matter of Fate?

Ellie: I wrote this story in part due to laziness. It's true! The original novel I wrote in the world I created was too long, too filled with back story and filler as I worked out how magic worked. So much so that editing it out would have been a nightmare. Instead I decided to write a new story, paralleling the original one.

Cloey: Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Ellie: There's the idea that sometimes you just have to buck up and do what you've got to do. The execution of this can be fun or it can be horrifying, but shirking the responsibility is not an option.

Cloey: Who was your favorite character and who was your least favorite character to develop and why?

Ellie: My favorite is the Puck, because he's a hoot to write. My least favorite was the 'bad guy', because I don't do horror and there's definitely an element of horror in the final scene. Or at least I thought so, but then again, I don't 'do' horror.

Cloey: What did you enjoy most about writing A Matter of Fate?

Ellie: The interactions between Mona and Cart were a lot of fun, in part because Mona is determinedly clueless.

Cloey: What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing the story to life?

Ellie: In addition to having to deal with the horror element at the end I did a fair amount of logistical research on the area and places where certain events could occur. Some of them I've visited on road trips with my family, others I've used search engine images to help me visualize.

Cloey: What are you working on now?

Ellie: I have a follow-up novel featuring the new leader of the Buffalo pack, Averill, in the works.

Cloey: What do you like to read in your free time?

Ellie: I read fantasy and mystery as well as paranormal and regency romance.

Cloey: Share with us something about yourself that we wouldn't see in your bio or on any other blogs (this can be anything from the type of music you like, your favorite color, or even your favorite meal - share whatever you want your fans to know about you)

Ellie: I love to track winter storms, going so far as to read through the various forecast models and joining online discussion groups to come up with my own analysis. I'm entirely self-taught, so there definitely some of the more technical stuff that's over my head. For a while I was the 'weather guru' for a small online community because of my predilection. I stopped when I moved several states away.

Cloey: Thank you so much for interviewing with me and sharing A Matter of Fate with us today it sounds like a good read. And Tracking storms sounds like a pretty cool hobby too.

A Matter of Fate
Ellie Heller

Genre: Paranormal Romance/ Contemporary Fantasy Romance

Publisher: Crimson Romance

Book Description:

Someone is setting death-spells targeting mortals and elf blood alike. With her mentor out of commission, it’s up to half-trained Warder Mona Lisa Kubrek to stop the magic. Despite being told repeatedly her job is to nullify spells and not go after the source, too many people are at risk for her to not track the spell-caster down. Even meeting a sexy half-elf shifter won’t distract her from her goal.

Except Cart Dupree is fully trained and has the team to search for the evildoer, so she’d be stupid to not use his expertise. Stupid is something she can’t afford to be, not with her enemy’s henchmen after her. Later she’ll deal with Cart and his questions about her special abilities and the non-standard training her mentor has given her. Right now, they need to unravel where the magician is, and who he is, before he builds enough power to decimate them all.

First, though, they need to stay alive.

E.B. Walters

He had an unforgettable face. Sharp cheekbones, square jaws and piercing gray eyes that didn’t say much. His dark wavy hair was cut short, but not too short. Unruly strands rebelled and curled across his brow and at his nape. His skin was bronze, like he spent time outdoors. The turned down waistband indicated no tan lines either. A nudist? Interesting.

“About last night,” she said casually, noticing he hadn’t touched his coffee. “I don’t usually pull a gun on unsuspecting people, and I make a really mean cup of coffee.” She slid the steaming cup closer. “Go on, try it.”

She’d hoped for a smile, but got a frown instead. Mr. Fitzgerald was obviously not a morning person. How long was he planning on staying? Baron and Kara Fitzgerald tended to visit for a few days to a week before heading back to L.A.

“Excuse me for asking a dumb question, but who is Raelynn?” Eddie asked.

“My daughter.”

He looked around, his gaze zeroing on the toys piled by the door leading to the patio before coming back to her. “How old is she?”

“Almost five going on thirty. Her birthday is in two weeks.”

“Where is she?”

“Still asleep, but she’ll be up any minute. Why do you ask?”

“I’d like us to have an adult discussion without a child clouding anyone’s judgment.”

He was going to say he didn’t need a housekeeper again. She just knew it. “Okay, but FYI, I have an iron-clad contract, so if you are thinking of kicking us out, I will sue you from here to kingdom come and win,” she said with a confidence she didn’t feel.

Eddie scowled. “Why would I kick you out?”

“Because you said you didn’t need me last night and that I should take a hike.”

“I never said that.”

“That’s what I heard.” She picked up her coffee mug with an unsteady hand and sipped, her gaze not shifting from his. “Why don’t we talk outside? You go put on a shirt or something while I dish up your breakfast.”

Eddie stared down at his bare chest as though realizing for the first time he was shirtless. A sheepish expression softened his features and heat coiled in Amy’s stomach, surprising her. It shot up a notch when he turned, giving her a view of his back. Powerful broad shoulders. Narrow hips. Killer ass. The man had a beautiful body.

Just before he disappeared into the hallway leading to the master bedroom, Eddie turned and caught her in the act. Without slowing down, he raised the mug to his lips and sipped, heat flashing in his eyes.
